SURPRISE trip to CALIFORNIA April 26-May 7, 2013
How do you know your kids may be getting too old to pull off surprise trips to California?
1) they read in your Google calendar the event "California trip" and ask about it.
2) they ask you everyday what you and their Sunday school teacher were talking about when you have to ask them to go to the car so you can tell the teacher they will be gone next week.
3) they get all wigged out about all of their shorts missing out of their drawer, when they swear the shorts were there last night. (They were on the drawer last night until I snuck in and packed after they went to bed)
Mom secretly packed everyone's clothes thursday night and packed the car all up. Friday, we picked up Dad from work and had a fun Dinner out. Then we all decided to "take a drive". About an hour into it, Dad got 'lost' and the boys started looked at the google maps trying to direct him back home, people were getting a little tired of driving no where. WE told them that this was a good lesson for life: if you dont have a clear end in mind, then the roads you take will get you no where. We talked about Planning and having purpose etc... So then they thought we did that whole 'getting lost' ordeal just to prove a lesson. While it was great..We decided to pull off and grab a snackB, and what the heck, why not get a Red Box too (since it was family movie night). That seemed to quiet them down a bit for a while. Then they played a few Ipad games and about 3 hours later (about 11pm) they started asking why it seemed to take so much longer to get back than when we had come out earlier? We kept avoiding questions nicely. At about 12:30am or so, we pulled into Andy and Sheri's neighborhood and looked for their house slowly. The kids asked where we were and if we were close to home. Dad told them he was still lost and was so tired that he pulled over and was going to see if these people would let us just stay the night there. It seemed like the lights were on and maybe the front door was unlocked. You should have seen the horror on Miles face. "Dad, you cant just walk into someone's house".

Up until this point, they have seen packed
bags in the back of the car, I randomly brought their blankets in the car, and
we've been driving for hours.(with them looking at maps)..still No clue!
No one asking anything!
Even with all if
the bags we unloaded they were clueless. I mean why would we just happen to have a car full of bags if we got lost for 5 hours on the highway? Ha ha ha . It wasn't until we walked into
Andy's house and they were freaked out, then they saw their family
picture on the wall and knew where we were. Miles said, "oh, we are at Ben and Henry's house Dad." He could sleep easier then. They don't know the details
for the rest of the trip yet. We are just going to surprise them
everyday until we go home in 10 days! Its so fun!
We clocked the temperature in our Car at 100 as we were leaving Phoenix. Yikes.
